Well, for one thing, actually, no they didn't, not for a long time.
The Greeks some 4 or 5 thousand years ago knew the Earth was round,
from the shadows cast by poles at noon, and the light reaching the
bottom of deep wells, and ships vanishing over the horizon as they
sailed away and so on.

Secondly, if there /was/ a time when people thought the world was
flat, then they were ignoring the above evidence, or failing to notice
it. Their model or their observations were inaccurate.

But either way, the key thing is, it didn't matter if there was a time
when everyone believed that the world was flat. It didn't make it
flat.

Billions of people fervently believing in a variety of gods does not
make those gods any more real.
