Sorry to have taken some time to reply - I couldn't get back to my
installation of Maverick to double-check my claims until earlier to day.
Mea culpa about the claim I made - I had totally forgotten that I had a
similar experience in another distro and for the same reasons :-( .
I inserted a DVD which played without any problems. Now that you have
queried this I looked at the DVD and see nothing exceptional about it
except that it was Manufactured in Hong Kong. The DVD is The Missionary,
with Michael Palin and Maggie Smith.
I then used a backup I made years ago while still using Windows of one
of my favourite (and original) films, The Planet of the Apes, with
Charlton Heston. This also played. Hence my conclusion. However, when I
tried to play the original DVD - it wouldn't play.
