I understand because of the timing it's seen as a reactive gesture.
But even under Sun's control there were murmurs that a "truly free"
(in this sense "free of corporate influence,") fork of OOo should
exist.

But I think the sentiment is less "crazy and dangerous" and more
"unpredictable" which could in some contexts be seen as the same
thing. but in any case an app as important to OSS desktop adoption as
OOo/LO ought to be in the control of a nonprofit foundation. Rather
than seeing it as a reaction to Oracle "craziness" lets look at it as
a positive step toward the independence of a crucial piece of desktop
software.
