It's mostly inarguable that PC gaming is lucrative. I don't think it's 
been key to the home PC market for a long time, though.

PC gaming is more complicated than console gaming, and people want simple.

The PC gaming market is rapidly approaching the console market, and the 
consumers don't appear to mind.
Modern Warfare highlighted the fact that mods and private servers really 
aren't that important to the bulk of PC gamers, and without that there's 
hardly much point maintaining a PC for gaming on.
