Its a very Mac like design, and I do remember reading something last
year about Shuttleworth wanting to beautify Ubuntu by emulating the
Mac OS X look.  Perhaps, the bottom Gnome panel should be replaced by
Gnome Do in Docky Mode or AWN.

Oh, that wouldn't just set the blogosphere on fire, most definitely
not.  No, it would cause an explosion that would make Chernobyl look
like a firecracker.  Fan-boys gone totally nuclear!

That would be fun to watch, from a minimum safe distance, while
wearing asbestos/anti-radiation underwear. ;-)
