Well, it looks like the problem was due to the insane default of 
shredder, presumably thanks to the infinite wisdom of the ppa chums, to 
synchronize EVERYTHING. I wondered where that 10G of space came from.

I will see if it reindexes and how bad it gets without keeping local copies.
