It's always been this way. You will see your own messages in a thread
_if_ someone replies to it. If nobody does then you likely won't see
it.

That wont change it. What happens is you send a mail to the list, the
mail goes to everyone, including you. Your version of the mail
bypasses the "Inbox" but you do actually receive it. As your TB is
most likely using IMAP to access the 'folders' (filters in gmail
parlance) and shows specifically the Inbox IMAP folder you wont see
the mail. As soon as someone replies, in order to preserve the thread,
gmail will populate your mail from 'me' in the Inbox, followed by the
reply that was sent to it. Then you'll see your mail, but it will
already be marked read.
It's the way gmail has worked from day one.
