Um. What other "major players" are there?

Do you mean FOSS OSs? If so, well, OpenBSD has Theo de Raadt.

If you mean major FOSS projects, well, the GNU project and EMACS have
RMS, Ubuntu has Mark Shuttleworth our highly-esteemed SABDFL, ReiserFS
had Hans Reiser, WINE has Alexandre Juillard... those are just the
five to spring to mind...
