There are many other root trees to choose from. People choose not to,
precisely because they appreciate Linus' oversight.
Viz: you are free to name your own [Unix kernel-like] tree "Reesix", but it
does not follow that anyone will use it---just as various people run
alternative DNS root trees for internet domains; but the large majority of
people still prefer the original root DNS tree.
