Karmic uses Grub 2 only for new installations.  If you are doing an
upgrade to Karmic, it should have kept it at Grub 1.  At least it did
for me for a Jaunty to Karmic upgrade; I have no idea if that same
logic applies for a Hardy to Karmic upgrade, which I believes is not a
supported upgrade path.
