The Morevna Project is an effort to create an anime from the old
Russian folktale "Marya Morevna" using free software tools and
releasing it under the free Creative Commons Attribution license. The
free open source software being used is Synfig and Blender. Synfig is
a powerful vector-based 2D animation package designed to produce
feature film quality animations with a minimum of staff and resources.
Blender is a powerful 3D modeling and animation package with
capabilities parallel to that of expensive closed-source alternatives. The
aim of the project is to gain attention for free open source software and
demonstrate what it can do.
Included in the article is a video of what they have been able to do so far.

Also, there is another project called the Open Movie Project which has
similar goals and has more funding. Their aim to is show that with
free tools a small project run by just a few people using free
software can turn out movies with similar if not equality quality to
Disney Pixar. Check out the latest movie from the project.
