The phoronix tests are rather interesting, as are the comments/discussions:

The performance results between 8.04, 10.04 and 10.10 are pretty
startling in some of the tests (particularly Apache, PostfreSQL, and
Himeno).

Note: I'll be happy to take the "Old Pentium 4 System" from the author
any time he's willing to give it up... I could then replace my
1Ghz/384Mb test box :-)
