/me sighs.

The Desktop isn't going away anytime soon. Its still got its uses.
Portable devices like the iPhone/iPad, and Android devices might be
pretty good but they still can't replace what a desktop system can do.
The GPUs used in smartphones and portable devices cannot match the
powerful and performance of GPUs available for desktops. At least
right now. It will be a number of years before they get that good,
but GPUs for the desktop still still be advancing at the same time.
There is also the versatility of the desktop. If a component goes out
on a smartphone or portable device you have to replace the whole
device. You can replace different parts on a desktop easily. Even
build your own. You can't build your own smartphone or device like
the iPad. Some have, but not everyone has the skills to make DIY
projects like that. The point is, mobile devices has their niche but
they likely won't ever replace the desktop.

As for desktop Linux. I think it was a mistake for Songbird to
discontinue Linux support. As a result they'll likely become isolated
in the open source community for their decision. Granted, Songbird
wasn't that widely used on Linux anyway and probably not that widely
used on Windows either. I've tried it and it was sluggishly slow.
Besides, Songbird was one out of how many open source media player
projects for Linux? They won't be missed.
