The video speed is a common bottleneck and one tool to measure this, is
glxgears. If you have significant difference in performance for various
types of video, then you should look at the application running the
video.
I personally find vlc being the best and easiest for all your media
needs. I never see any significant differens between flash, mpeg, avi,
etc. when using vlc. I don't know if it makes a difference, the way you
installed support for playing DVD. I have used:
