Music compression on the GPU

A thought from a friend of mine...

Has anyone tried to use any of this new GPGPU and CUDA type tech to
write an MP3/Ogg/whatever encoder for sound samples that uses the GPU
to do the heavy lifting instead of the CPU?

I spent much of last summer re-ripping my CD collection at high
quality. Then my server died and when recovering from my backups the
backup drive died too. I am looking at spending weeks doing it all
again.

But it seems to me something almost ideal for GPGPU use, no?
