Having read Colin's other posts, I seem to be wrong in this regard.
Seems to me things have changed, because when Update Manager was new I
am pretty sure I have read in some Ubuntu docs or dev mailing list that
upgrades through "apt-get dist-upgrade" are not tested and therefore may
or may not work. Or maybe I was drunk.

Of course, doing so will expect you to resolve some conflicts manually
(that's why I said initially that it can be done by someone well-versed
with the tools) and to read the upgrade notes to make changes that
cannot be expressed in packages or their dependencies, but which can be
taken care of by Upgrade Manager (or its CLI counterpart)
