apt-get/aptitude for installing packages are just fine, and supported.

We just don't guarantee that an entire dist-upgrade from, say 6.06 to
8.04 or even 8.04 to 8.10 works with apt-get dist-upgrade.

If you are willing to clean up a bit after dist-upgrade, or running it
several times perhaps (if the first one broke on a file conflict, or
whatever), then you can still use dist-upgrade, but you should be a
bit familiar with apt-get then.
