Well, on the 1 hand, AIUI dist-upgrade is /not/ a supported mechanism
for Ubuntu. Not sure if this also applies to server.

However, saying that, I agree - I've seen my own machine broken more
than once by doing a proper, update-manager driven upgrade from 1
release to the next. This is why I tend to give friends the LTS
release - so they won't have to do it. In a few years' time, either
the machine will be replaced & thus a doorstop or scrap, *or* it'll be
time for a complete wipe & reload anyway.
