These days, PCs have *ridiculous* amounts of CPU and memory, with the
bottlenecks from a long update being (a) network (b) disk I/O. So
binary patching would alleviate network, not be a problem for CPU and
memory and possibly make disk I/O slightly worse.

Does Debian mentor Google Summer of Code? :-D
