Restricted modules in Ubuntu

For what it's worth, Ubuntu is _foundation_ which could (if Canonical
disappeared) fund a _project_ called Ubuntu which has a _product_
called Ubuntu. It's not as clear cut as "Canonical pay for stuff,
Ubuntu is the software".

A little nitpicky maybe, but it's a common misconception.

Not all of them. You mentioned w32codecs and medibuntu which isn't
hosted by Canonical.
