Fw: pidgin

 Pidgin cease to load so I un-installed in SPM, but before attemptin to re-install I went to their home page. It gave me 2 terminal options and I tried them both without success, but I discovered what could be my problem.

I intered  apt-get build-dep gaim as well as apt-get build-dep pidgin
Both times I received the following
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
allen at allen-laptop:~$ 
Could someone direct me on how to get back to pidgin with a fresh install and unlocking whatever needs unlocking/
