Help with log in problem

Hello,
   I am using Ubuntu Edgy as a Dual boot system, with Windows XP.  I still
have access to Windows, but now when I boot up in Ubuntu, I can't log in. I
get the screen where i enter the user name and then the password, but after
entering the password, instead of getting into a session, the screen goes
black, and then the log in screen appears again. I have abosultely no clue
as to what is happening.
