I just read that news and I am so excited I had to post about it !
It's on sounder so anything is allowed anyway ;-)

The news, very long and detailed, reveals that Intel plans not only on
making discrete video cards rather than just embedded, but at the same
time drop a gear or two, and target high-end graphics. In other words,
they are going to enter the same market as ATI and Nvidia.
Now, although one more competitor can only be good for prices and
innovation, it wouldn't change much to our current problems on Linux.

But, since Intel appears to be committed to deliver free Linux drivers
for their on-board graphics chips, as well as wifi and network etc, we
can dream that they will not break this Linux friendly policy, and also
provide free Linux drivers for there discrete cards, thus instantly
forcing ATI and Nvidia to free their drivers ! And if ATI and Nvidia
don't want to move, well, we can just buy Intel from now on and forget
completely about Nvidia and ATI !
At any rate, that would solve this horrible ATI/Nvidia proprietary
drivers issue, 3D could work out of the box without having to
compromise freedom, bugs could be fixed, support for old card would not
be dropped arbitrarily anymore to force people to buy newer cards, etc,
etc.

Now, obviously, it all depends on Intel willingness to stay true to
their current policy of open drivers... let's cross fingers, the 3D
revolution on Linux might be round the corner for 2007 !!! :o)

2007 is looking very interesting/promising already !! :o)
