I can't speak for every case, but I know one of the (many) reasons is
that healthcare in the United States is hard to come by if you don't
work for a company that has group health coverage. Larger the better deal.
If I worked contract or remote for a company I'd have to purchase
at-risk insurance (due to our circumstances) from the state for abut 25%
more than a normal private insurance contract, which is still about 2x
(or more) as much as I'd pay working for a large employer with a good
group plan.
Hopefully we fix this broken system in the next decade. Our state is
'unique' in the sense that we have a tax to fund an at-risk pool. Many
states do not have this insurer-of-last-resort system for individual
health insurance.
Thanks,
