Shortage of IT people ?

I can't speak for every case, but I know one of the (many) reasons is 
that healthcare in the United States is hard to come by if you don't 
work for a company that has group health coverage.  Larger the better deal.

If I worked contract or remote for a company I'd have to purchase 
at-risk insurance (due to our circumstances) from the state for abut 25% 
more than a normal private insurance contract, which is still about 2x 
(or more) as much as I'd pay working for a large employer with a good 
group plan.

Hopefully we fix this broken system in the next decade.  Our state is 
'unique' in the sense that we have a tax to fund an at-risk pool.  Many 
states do not have this insurer-of-last-resort system for individual 
health insurance.
