Ubuntu logo/Mandelbrot set separated at birth?

I think, the logo derives from the original 3-people ring [0] which was on the 
cover of the first Ubuntu release. But to be sure we should ask Mark or Jeff 
Waugh who seem to be those who created the logo. 

And I must say, there is - at least for me - not much similarity with the 
Mandelbrot set. There was definitely a connection to the Mandelbrot set in 
early SuSE where they used various fractals on the covers of their CD sets 
[1]. But there might also just be a relation to the chameleon tail :-) [2]
