I read the thread on the openSUSE ML and (after sifting through lots
of posts by people who acted as if Mark had put lemon in their coffee
;) here were the two best posts IMHO:

http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2006-11/msg03908.html
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2006-11/msg03899.html

An extract of the first is worth copying in here:

---
All questions of divisiveness and GPL-fidelity aside, two things
impress me deeply here.

1. Grand Ubuntu Poobah's cojones in coming forth as an individual and
issuing such an invitation.

2. The freedom and public openness with which others in the
organization state their views on their leader's decision.

Quite remarkable.
