When I said "application" then i mean something that can be a separate
application; it could be the same application, but that's not "the UNIX
way"...   ;-)

See Nikolai explaining storing processing settings in a database to be
able to view the RAW images properly--you don't need this only when
converting to another file format or for editing the image.
