Thought I'd chuck in a post that recently appeared in the Ubuntu-art
mailing list, and yes it is from Mark.

I should update you all on the current thinking post-Dapper.
First, we will continue to polish and invest in Human. We have a very
distinctive look, and until one of the new themes matures to the point
that it really can replace Human, we won't switch the default.
Second, we will open up at least one, possibly two new themes, that have
distinctive look and feel. Those will be community driven, with a clear
leadership structure and decision making process per theme. So there
will be no dispute about where the buck stops for each of those themes.
These can mature during Edgy and Edgy+1, and possibly become the new
default in a later release.
Third, we will invest in development to expand the theming system, so
that background colour and image for desktop is part of the theme, for
example.
