In the eighties, I worked on a system that used to intercept incoming messages 
from foreign correspondents (reporters) in out of the way places and relay 
them to various newspapers and broadcasters, etc. All of these reporters used 
to have 300baud acoustic couplers and little Tandy 100 laptops. The acoustic 
coupler modems were the only way to send stories from some places. All you 
would need would be a normal telephone. Try connecting a modern modem to a 
hotel call box in Tierra Del Fuego!
