"For security reasons" and to make sure that people end up with what they're
expecting, if you're going to put a link in an email it's generally
preferable to spell it you in full:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
These days, regexs in the terminal-emulator or email-client will pick this
URL up[0] and do useful things with it (eg. Right Click->Open Link) so I
expect that it may even be less useful.

[0] except when the URL contains unescaped (' ') spaces; or when launchpad
wraps the URL at each ('-') hyphen.
