OK, thanks.  How exactly does Automatic work?  Does it try to connect to
ESD or use ALSA directly?

So mixing is still happening in ESD rather than using ALSA's dmix?

Where can I find ESD's ALSA settings?

(It's hard for me to test the most common config as I only have hardware
mixing devices)
