Thank you.  I've been fighting various developers over this for more than a
year.  Developers who'll argue that a bug is not a bug because you don't
have some dependency of ubuntu-desktop installed.  I'd keep it installed if
it really used "recommends" and "depends".  

Generally, I install with aptitude - which does handle "recommends" but not
well.  If you try to remove a "recommend" it's just as likely to remove the
meta-package, too.
