It is a symptom of a larger issue. Removing ubuntu-desktop (or any 
*-desktop) breaks upgrades, so there is no way to remove unneeded 
packages. This shouldn't be the case, but fixing the problem would be 
rather difficult.

Of course, the practice of adding packages to ubuntu-desktop which >90% 
of users don't want only exacerbates the issue. Perhaps it is time to 
come up with a better way of doing this?
