k, thanks.  I've attached the patch to the Ubuntu bug report and emailed
it to upstream, and left a note in the bug report to that effect.

So let's make it a little less hypothetical:

This is the first time I've contributed the solution and not just
reported the bug, so I'd appreciate critique, offlist or on.
