Gnome volume control applet supports OSS mixer only?

Already tried, does not work.  The only device listed under "File ->
Change Device" is "Sigmatel STAC9721,23 (OSS Mixer)".  I used to have a
choice of ALSA Mixer and OSS mixer and ALSA was the default.
