Gnome volume control applet supports OSS mixer only?

I normally don't use the Gnome mixer applet, but I tried adding it to
the panel today to find that it now only supports the "OSS Mixer", and I
only get a playback tab, no capture.  This is not very useful and seems
to be a regression.

This used to work.  Is it a known bug?  I have verified that the ALSA
mixer interface is working by running alsamixer.
