XScreenSaver vs. GnomeScreensaver

Can anyone please point me to the discussion if and why we prefer
gnome-screensaver over xscreensaver? I've just read review of FC5, which
also switched from xscreensaver to gnome-screensaver, stating that this
was a step backwards, because gnome-screensaver had less screensavers
and "offered less options and animations" [1].

I'd like to read about arguments and opinions that I can raise in 
discussion, rants and flamewares which will arise after dapper relase.
