I just happen to be in a middle of helping a non-technical person that I
don't know to install Ubuntu (very basic stuff). I'm helping him by
e-mail and there obviously isn't anyone around him who could help (he
picked my e-mail address from a mailing list). He just got the idea of
trying Linux and want's to introduce it to his family too.
As Henrik said, people can be drawn in - even non-technicals. I think
there even isn't a clear line between "technical" and "non-technical"
person. People with less and less computer background can be "drawn in"
- it just depends on how easy Ubuntu is made for people to approach - in
every possible way.
