The entire issue would be solved and be non-existant, if release dates were
March and September (6.3, 6.9) and 'extranous' zeros could go away.

I'm half-minded to (jokingly) suggest bringing forward the release date by a
fortnight for the next release cycle, to make things easy (...would require
the cooperation of GNOME ;-)... Or in the other direction (6.5, 6.11).

Now, if the general population understood hexadecimal, we could have
6.4 and 6.a! Or even 6.33, 6.83 (in decimal years!).

Personally, I like the current numbering; it sucks /less/ than most of the
alternatives such as a Microsoft-style "Ubuntu 2003 Plus Edition for 64-bit",
but could definately do with fixing if a good (better) solution is presented.
