Yeah, and they help to identify with the product. And I never could recall  
the version numbers of Debian, I fully accepted PotatoWoodySargeSid. And a  
Badger or Dapper is even more burned into mind.

About version numbers: I think the 5.04 5.10 6.04 method is quite easy to  
promote if the public gets the idea behind. And it's shorter to type and  
voice than a full year 2005 2006 which could cause some confusion when  
6.04 is followed by 2006/10. But the dog/10 idea is quite nice, would make  
Ubuntu more unique.
