I agree completely. (And not just because I personally have my browser
set to always 'use system colors', so then all drop down lists look
transparent and are hard to read. :)

I'd try to avoid using ANY kind of java (or worse: flash) tricks until
there's really no other way to properly present the content. One thing
I really like about the current site is that it's clean, lean and
effective; the current site displays totally FINE even on my phone, or
on a text-based browser from a terminal. Let's not give that up unless
there's a really compelling reason for it.
