The ease of removing ubuntu-desktop

OK, I needed to install wine on a Dapper system so I simply added
universe and multiverse to sources.list, and ran "apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade".  The package manager removed totem and
ubuntu-desktop, and now refuses to install them!

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop totem

And no matter what I do, I cannot get ubuntu-desktop to install now.  It
tells me that "totem-gstreamer is already the latest version" even
though totem depends on a newer version!
