gnome-volume-manager not working

I am running Dapper and have dbus, hal, and gnome-volume-manager
installed but no matter what I do I cannot get Gnome to mount my ipod
automatically when I plug it in. It does show up in "Places->Computer"
but if I double click it I get a useless "Unable to mount the selected
volume" error dialog - "Show More Details" says "error: could not
execute pmount". /usr/bin/pmount does exist.

It works if I mount it manually from the command line so I know this is
a Gnome problem not a kernel one.

What am I missing here?
