Exactly.  This is why we need both the technical reality of it being a
substitute for non-geeks AND the perception.  Then we can get the vendor
buy-in.  I picture this conversation:

Customer: "How much for this PC?"
Salesman: "$800, or $900 if you want Windows instead of Ubuntu."

That will be a glorious day.  Even better would be if they didn't sell
it with Windows installed at all; they just throw a box in the bag if
you pay the extra, but Ubuntu is installed anyway and the user boots the
machine up without opening the Windows package.
