Partitions in /media/

hi all
I was wondering if there is a particular reason for partitions to be
moved into /media/. Anyone know?
I remember when /media was made to move the media *away* from the
partitions, but now it seems to be that the partitions are simply moving
*back in* - this time in a new directory.
