How are those names worse than Vista? At least they weren't pinched from
some other business.

I've always regarded the Ubuntu names, which mean absolutely nothing to
me, as slightly eccentric, somewhat refreshing after some of the IBM
names I've been using for 30 years or so:
OS	Operating system (I kid you not)
DOS	Disk Operating System. There were also TOS and BOS.
VM	Virtual Machine
OS/VS{,1,2}	Operating System/Virtual Storage {, One, Two} The latest
incarnation of OS/VS2 is Z/OS - Zed Operating System.
IMS	Instant Machine Sale (Whoops Information Management System), a DBMS.
IMS/DB The database part of IMS
IMS/DC The communications part of IMS
Then there are the Access Methods such as BTAM, VTAM, TCAM, QSAM, BSAM,
BDAM, GAM, VSAM, ISAM, QISAM, BISAM and more.
