That's completely different. Microsoft (or Windows at least), isn't
"bad" because it's popular, or widely used. It's "bad" because of it's
proprietary nature, which causes bad things such as vendor lock-in,
limitations on use, and many other bad things. Ubuntu will never be
those things, no matter how popular it becomes. I'm sure that having
many Ubuntu based distributions, will improve colaboration, and will
increase competition, not kill it.
There will always be a need to have different distributions, and
different ways of doing things. I don't think having more Ubuntu based
distributions will ever change this.
