I don't know if replacing is possible, it would probably force people
to have to learn a new API, and change all their existing code to use
it...

I have just tried the demo version (which includes only an incomplete
port of the rendering engine, and has no editing support) and it feels
really fast even on my P3 666MHz with a TNT2 graphics card (nvidia
legacy binary drivers).
