If you like lager (which I see you don't), Calton Draught is actually quite
good IMO. One of the best lagers I've ever had. Far better than Fosters,
VB and Crown, which are from the same company, not that many Australians
would actually class Fosters as an Australian beer since no-one there
actually drinks it. But yeah, definitely avoid the common WA beers; Redback
(a wheat beer) and Swan (a lager) are aweful IMO. But Little Creatures and
Bootleg produce some fabulous brews. Likewise for Coopers (from SA). Their
Extra Stout is very nice.
Another good beer that is quite commonly found on tap, at least in NSW, is
Tooheys Old, a dark beer.
But up north, where it's dry and very hot, a nice cold XXXX Gold (a
mid-strength lager) is quite refreshing and very popular.
Problem is that most of these beers are only good on tap and a lot are best
enjoyed in certain weather, so it's difficult to emulate the whole
experience really.
