I also gave up on streaming a year or so ago, mostly because more and more of
them were using Microsoft-based solutions for streaming; especially online
radio stations. Have you try podcasting? There are thousand of shows out
there, some crap, some very good. But since they are one audio file per show,
usually mp3 (but sometimes ogg), "broadcasters" have to keep them in a simpler
technology than streams. That makes them a lot easier to listen to using
existing applications in Ubuntu. (rhythmbox + gstreamer0.8-mad and you are set).
